What is a Swan Song?

"Swan song" is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement. The phrase refers to an ancient belief that the Mute Swan is completely silent during its lifetime until the moment just before death, when it sings one beautiful song.

What I'm looking for...

First of all, a Swan Song does not mean that your entry must be strictly related to Swans. Swan Song in itself is a figure of speech that refers to any final act just before death or retirement. I will accept the Swan Song of any character, both yours & Fan-Fiction - even your own Swan Song. But of course, writing about a swan's Swan Song is totally acceptable too.

For example: Most of you know the story of Beowulf, yes? Consider how his tale is in and of itself a Swan Song. He lived out his life & grew into a surly, bored old man. The arrival of a dragon in his last days proved to be a final act that redeemed his honor & and his life. The slaying of the dragon was indeed Beowulf's Swan Song.

I want tragedy and romance! It's the end; it's your last song... and you have to give it your all! Like I said - sticking to the swan theme is acceptable, but I want originality! I want you to take this loose theme and run with it... tell me what you would do in your final moments. Tell me what your original character would do, or what Loki would do if he was ever finally cornered by Thor.

4,000 word limit for prose & poetry entries.

You must mention in your Artist's Comments that your entry was created for OfOneSoul's contest with a link to this journal.

Please include in your Artist's Comments how your entry relates to the theme Swan Song.

Only Literature & Fan-Fiction entries are accepted.
